My Mama’s Satisfying Trifle

This scrumptious treat has been my base of sweets for a very long time. Basically, every time my mom didn’t have time to bake or she wanted to simplify her time, she made us a great creamy fruity dessert – My Mama’s Satisfying Trifle.

You need 1 package of desirable ladyfingers. You can also make them yourself or buy them sweetened, perhaps healthier are whole-wheat ones. For the alcoholic version, you can soak them in a liquor, similarly as in My Dear Peach Tiramisu Recipe. As I usually use quite juicy fruits (especially frozen ones), it isn’t necessary. I also served this trifle for kids.

The second important ingredient is sour cream, so popular in Eastern and Central Europe. It consists of less fat than e.g. crème fraîche, and it is not as heavy as double cream. In combination with icing sugar and vanilla sugar it does magic. Add good quality cocoa powder and you have 2 different colours. Kids love that and I am not even mentioning the chocolate lovers among us.

The last but not least, are fruits as per your family preference: bananas especially in combination with cocoa cream, all kinds of berries, peaches, kiwi, etc. There are no limits to your imagination. The fresher the better. Do not forget that frozen ones are quite juicy.

My Mama’s Trifle is the best after some hours of chilling, still good on the next day and day after. However, try to eat it within 2 days.

This trifle is suitable for kids from the age of 18 months, after you succesfully added milk products like yoghurts into nutrition. Offer as an afternoon snack.

Total Time: 20 minutes + some hours to chill in the fridge

Instructions

In a transparent serving bowl or box place ½ package of ladyfingers. I used the form of 15×15 cm. If you want to make it as a round tart of 25 cm, use the double amount of ingredients (4 sour creams in total).

Next, gently place the pieces of nectarines on the top.

In a small metal bowl put 1 cup of sour cream, 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, 2 tablespoons of icing sugar and 1 package of vanilla sugar. Give it a good stir and taste.

Layer the trifle with the cocoa cream and start the whole procedure once again. Ladyfingers, the rest of nectarines and blueberries. You can leave some of the blueberries to decorate the top.

Then, place 1 cup of sour cream in another mixing bowl. Mix with sugar and taste.

Smoothen the cream over the top. Sprinkle with cocoa powder or decorate with rest of the blueberries. Cover the trifle and refrigerate for a couple of hours before serving.

Makes 5 serves.
